Vernon Osment Williams, Sr . age 80 of Cleveland, TN, passed away on June 23, 2019 at his home. He is preceded in death by his parents, Silas Williams and Orpha Mae (Osment) Williams, two sons, Jerry Lee and Cornell Williams, three brothers, James Lee Williams, John Stanley (Nancy) Williams, Thurman Merrill Williams and five sisters, Nora Mae Williams, Lillian Ware, Alma Jo Williams, Kathleen (George) Lodge and Willie Carzelle (Harold) Brown and one son-in-law, Curtis Pettaway II.
He served his country proudly in the United States Army and worked two decades at Magic Chef as a molder before retiring at Olin/Arch Chemicals. He enjoyed composing scrapbooks from the Cleveland Daily Banner and donated most of those clippings to the Cleveland Museum.
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Willa Dean Blair Williams, two sons, Vernon Jr. and Bill Williams (caregiver) all of Cleveland, TN. Two daughters, Evangelist, Tona Williams of Cleveland, TN, and Janet Pettaway of Murfreesboro, TN. Four grandsons, LeVar Williams, of Atlanta, Ga, Minister Solomon Williams (Kyeshia) of Chattanooga, TN, Curtis Pettaway III and Abdul Williams of Cleveland, TN and one granddaughter, Shiesha Pettaway of Murfreesboro, TN. Nine great-grandchildren, LaKasha, Zadarius, Andrew, Bailee and Zoe Williams, Jairus, Xavier and Ja'Nyah Pettaway and Shyliah Jackson. One sister, Dana Hurst of Cheektowaga, NY, one brother-in-law, Simon Ware and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends. Special friends, Dr. Cornell Lane, James Beck and Donnie Gill.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 27, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. at M.D. Dotson and Sons Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Cleveland, TN. with Evangelist Jeff Archey officiating, and Minister Solomon Williams delivering the eulogy. The family will receive friends thirty minutes before the service at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.Internment will be at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Vernon Williams, Sr. will lie in state Wednesday, June 26 2019 from 12 noon until 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
