Vergil Phillip Smith

Vergil Phillip Smith age 85 of Athens, passed April 20, 2018. He was a member of Cox Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served as a deacon. He worked in construction for many years as an asphalt finisher.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Minnie and David Smith, two sisters, Oggie McDermott, and Lafreda Moore, six brothers, Alonzo Smith, Lloyd Smith, William Smith, Joe Smith, Calvin Smith, and Fred Smith.

Survivors include two sons, Vergil Smith of Athens, Tn, and Phillip Smith of Maryville, TN. Daughters, Karen Denese Williams (Leroy) of Cleveland, TN., Velva Lucille Moss (Bill Jr.) of Athens, TN., and Cecily Smith of Kentucky.

Six grandchildren, Angelia Thomas, Catisha Jackson, Sheena Smith, Josh Williams, Taunya Moss, And Darius Moss. 13 great grandchildren, one great-great grand child, special sister-in-law Zella Mae Smith of Niota, TN., special friend, Mrs. Henry Nallory, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 27, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Holmes delivering the eulogy. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Lanetown Cemetery in Niota, TN. Visitation by friends will begin after 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
