Pearly Mae Smith age 89 of Athens, TN passed Monday morning December 5, 2022 in a local Etowah, TN hospital. She was baptized  by Rev. Thomas Ratledge in Loudon County, TN and attended and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Athens, TN where she served on the usher board. Pearly loved music, cooking,  ironing and was an avid reader of the Bible where she had read from cover to cover three times and was working on her fourth before her health began to fail.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter ‘Tubby’ Brown, her son Wayne Hurst, grandson, William Curtis ‘Curt’ Brown, and life partner Frank Harvey Wells.

Twelve brothers and sisters, Mattie Smith Sharp, Mary Glenn Smith-Robinson, Ella Hurst, Lilly Smith, Dorothy Coleman, Roosevelt Smith, M.C. Smith, Melvin Smith, John Smith. Garland Smith, Herbert Smith, and Sam Smith.

Memories of her love and laughter will be cherished by her family, sons, Gale Montgomery of Alcoa, TN., James William ‘Rosey’ Brown (Dianne) of Loudon, TN. Two daughters, Gloria B. Jones of Loudon, TN., and Armetta ‘Chopp’ Murdic (Tony) of Athens, TN. Six grandchildren, Wanda Montgomery, Jovan M. Jones, Ashley Murdic, Alvina T. Brown, Kimberly Hurst, and Kathleen Hurst. 19 great -grandchildren.  Special nieces, Patricia Fowler, Mary Virginia Robinson, Mary Frances Willis, Rosa Lee Ridley. Many nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Christopher Eady officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Hammonds Cemetery in Athens, TN.
