Kenneth Wade Hammonds was born to George and Henrietta Hammonds on March 17, 1938. He was the third of seven children. He grew up in Charleston, TN, and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was married to Bertie L. Moss in 1957. Four sons were born to them. Michael L. Hammonds, Kenneth S. Hammonds, Gerald J. Hammonds, and Curtis E. Hammonds. Wade and Bertie also had the privilege of raising their first grandchild, Jessica L. Hammonds.

Growing up he was especially close to his older sister Martha and their close relationship lasted throughout their adult lives. He supported his family mainly by working at Bowater Paper Mill for 40 years until he retired. He was a very hard-working man that always took on projects around his home. Many expected to see him working in his beautiful and well-producing garden. Earlier this year he worked in the garden while riding his scooter. He enjoyed seeing new places and learning new things. He loved learning about the Bible and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1993. He held the Bible’s promises for the future very dear to his heart. He also liked trying new foods. Just recently he tried Kudzu jelly and rattlesnake sausage and enjoyed them both! At the age of eighty-three, he traveled many hours to see how cotton was picked today, eager for the opportunity to continue learning. He was always someone you could go to and hear exciting, funny, and interesting family stories. He spent his last months traveling and experiencing new things. Cruising to Mexico and traveling on a scenic route by train viewing the Hiwassee River gorge. Choosing to spend his last days positively. All in the family are thankful for those that helped him have these positive adventures during his last months.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bertie L. Hammonds, parents George and Henrietta Hammonds, brother Horace "Pete" Hammonds, sisters Martha Gillespie and Eliza "Elsie" Barnett, and daughter-in-law Mildred E. Hammonds.

He is survived by his brother Raymond "Larry" Hammonds and sisters Joann Cooley and Alice Gibbs, his four sons, Michael and his wife Gerri, Kenneth, Gerald, and Curtis, Seven grandchildren, Jessica, Corey, Marla (Alan), Micaiah (Jeffery), Kenny, Josiah, and Amber, also many great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
