Johnnie Mae Hawkins Smith, age 80 exchanged earthly life for her angel wings early Sunday Morning February 25, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Johnnie Mae retired from Athens Products after 32 plus years of service. She continued to work after her retirement as a greeter at Walmart. She had also worked at Epperson Hospital and at TWC in the dining hall.
Johnnie Mae was united in marriage to Joe David Smith in August 1956 and he preceded her in death on January 15, 2017. To this union four children were born. She loved working in her yard and cooking. You could always get a meal if you stopped by.
She was a member of Lane’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where she worked tirelessly until her health began to fail. She loved singing and was the Choir Director under many pastors. She also served as usher president, and on the hospitality committee.
Johnnie Mae was preceded in death by her loving husband Joe, an infant son, her father and mother Henderson and Rosa Hawkins, Sister, Almetta (Reagan) Wells, Brother- Arthur Hawkins, Sister-in-laws, Oggie Mae (Theodore) McDermott, Lafreda (Troy) Moore, Brother-in-laws,Alonzo (Lucille) Smith, William (Viola) Smith, Lloyd Smith, Rev. Calvin (Mary Frances) Smith, and Fred Smith.
Left to mourn her passing are her children, Brenda Parks, Niota, TN, Angela (Kim) Farner, Cartersville, GA, Christopher N (Rachel) Smith, Niota, TN, grandson,Hayden Smith, Brother-in-law, Phillip Smith, devoted sister-in-law, Zella Mae Smith, devoted nephew and nieces Larry and Debra Wells, Lisa Ramsey, Regenia Smith, Veronica Clark and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special cousins, Bill Moss of Etowah, TN., and Rebecca Cullom of Knoxville, TN., and special caregivers, Brenda Curry, Regenia G. Ramsey, and Ramona Brad.
Homegoing services will be held Friday, March 2, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Lane Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with minister Veronica Clark delivering the eulogy and Pastor Hugh Dixon officiating, Family will receive friends one hour before the service from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at McMinn Memorial Gardens. Services of loving memory entrusted to M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home- Athens, TN.
