John Henry Smith of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Chattanooga, TN hospital. He was age 83. John was born on October 9, 1934 in Flintstone, GA to the late James Andrew and Mary Frances Smith. Mr. Smith was a long time member of Greater Chandler Chapel Baptist Church, serving over the years as a deacon. He worked for Cotton Chemical, Swift, and Bunge Oil. He retired from Bunge Oil after 33 years of service with no time late to work. He attended Hill High in Lafayette, Georgia where he played football. He enjoyed flea marketing, playing cards, storytelling, fishing, traveling, but most of all he enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family. He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Annie Laurie Smith, his parents James and Mary Frances Smith, his sister Anna Margaret Eberhardt, his granddaughter Conswella Latrice Eppinger, and his great-grandson Kayson Jeffery Phillips.
He is survived by his children; John A. Smith (a.k.a. Scoopy), Billy R. Smith, Ritchie L. Smith (Nikoel), Marva J. Smith (Gary), Alice M. Evans (Albert), Hamilton E. Smith, and Frances S. Smith (Alan), brothers James (Dorothy) and Hamilton (Cassandra) Smith and sister Mary Frances Elizabeth Finley. He has 25 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. He also leaves to cherish two special family members Naomi (Bobbie) Moore and Peggy Goodine as well as Tederall Wadley who was like a son.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland, TN with Rev. Wilber Waddle officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. at the church. Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cleveland, Tennessee.
