James Walter Sherman of Athens TN went home to be with the L ord on January 6, 2018 at the age of 94. He was born September 11 , 1923. He was the Eldest member of Freedm a n Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Athens, TN where he also served on the Deacon Board. At the age of 11 he began to work with his mother at Tennessee Wesleyan College in the Maintenance dept. He was dedicated and devoted to his job for over 70 years where he received several awards and recognition for his service until his health caused him to stop working at the age of 90. He loved to help others when he could, fixing plumbing problems and working on lawn mowers all over the neighborhood. He also took on the services of Mr. John Love for many years. He was also a devoted family man that took care of his mother, his sister's two children and their children.
He was preceded in death by his father William Sherman, mother Betty Carlock Sherman, sister Mary Sherman Billups , special nephew Johnny E. Billups and special niece Margaret Billups Nash .
He leaves to cherish his memory two g reat n ephews , William (Laura)Billups of Athens , TN and Christopher (Sonya) Brabson of Cleveland , TN , two g reat n ieces , Renee Biran of Houston TX and Annissa Brabson of Columbia KY , a lso sixteen 3rd g eneration, twenty-one , 4th g eneration and one , 5th g eneration of n ieces and n ephews and a special cousin Luther Neil Jones
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 13 , 2018 at 1 :00 p.m. at Freedman Chapel CPA Church with Rev. Edmond Cox officiating and Rev. A rchie Smart delivering the e ulogy . The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 1 2 : 00 until 1 :00 at the church. Interment will follow at Bethsalem Cemetery .
