James H. (Sonny) Oggs , aged 78, of Spring City, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, November 7, at CHI Memorial Hospital.He was born in Sweetwater TN on March 5, 1944 to the late Thelma Olivia Oggs and Ivon Lenoir.

Sonny lived most of his life in Spring City and was a 1961 graduate of High Point High School and received an associate degree years later from Roane State Community College.

He was an active member of Euchee Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church and a former active member of Prince Hall Masonic Lodge #365 of Spring City TN and he became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity at Tuskegee Institute.

He retired from ORNL Biology Library in Oak Ridge TN, where he was employed for thirty-plus years.

Sonny traveled for many years throughout East Tennessee communities, evangelizing through song with The Chimes of Faith, United Church of Christ choir, with family gospel group, The Gillespie Singers and as a soloist on recording albums. He had many talents and was gifted with strong artistic ability.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley A. Oggs; son Joseph V. Oggs; sister — Catherine Hague; brothers — Otis Anthony Scruggs, William Tony Scruggs, James (Jimmy) Scruggs.

He is survived by the following: sons — Vashon (Stacey) Oggs, Nashville, TN, and Jason (Nicole) Oggs, Nashville, TN; grandsons — Kannon Oggs, Dayton, TN, Xavier Oggs, Braxton Oggs, Jayden Oggs, Nashville, TN, and Priest Oggs, Loudon, TN; sisters — Mary Scruggs, Toledo, OH ; Yvonne Jones, Sweetwater, TN; mother-in-law, Corine Lenoir, Sweetwater, TN; brothers-in-law — Booker T. (Carolyn) Gillespie and Alvas Gillespie; special friend Betty Wilkerson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be at 3pm Sunday, November 13,2022 at First Baptist Church, 374 W. Jackson Avenue, Spring City, TN 37381 , with Rev. Candice Dendy officiating. Visitation by family and friends will be on Sunday one hour before the service from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Euchee-Gillespie Cemetery in Spring City, TN.

In keeping with Covid-19 protocol, masks are required.
