James Buchanan, Jr.

James Arthur Buchanan Jr age 73 passed Thursday, July 15, 2021 at his home in Athens, TN. He was a graduated of McMinn High School, where he played football. He enjoyed fishing, and was excited to be apart of any pickup basketball game with his friends.  He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was employed for years as a laborer in the construction industry.

He is preceded in death by his parents , James Arthur Buchanan Sr., and Lorraine Baker Smith.

Survivors include his wife of  48 years, Annie M. Bates Buchanan of Athens, TN., one son Troy (Fatishia) Buchanan of Nashville, and two daughters, Kimberly Andrus of Athens, TN., and Santa (Drew) Boyland of Cleveland, TN . Many grandchildren, and one great-grandson, sisters and brothers, George Buchanan of Niota, TN., Luther Buchanan of Madisonville, TN., Cecil Goodner of Cleveland, TN., Arlene Buchanan of Sweetwater, TN., Sue Buchanan of Athens, TN., Sharon Smith and Carolyn Smith of Louisville, Ky., sister and brother-in-law, Jean McCants of Maryland, and DeWitt Bates of Virginia, many relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held for Friday, July 23, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home – Athens, TN. with minister Stephen Powell delivering words of comfort.   Interment will follow at Hammonds Cemetery with a military honor guard salute.
