Evelyn Anderson King was born January 3, 1928, in Cleveland, Tennessee and departed on October 24, 2022, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Evelyn was born to the late Gideon and Lessie Austin-Anderson.

Evelyn was educated in the Bradley County School System and graduated from College Hill High School in 1947. She married Sherman King. They celebrated the lives of their four children before entering Tennessee State University. Graduated in 1962 with her degree in Elementary Education, which provided a great foundation for her 30-year teaching career in the Chattanooga City School System.

Her active life included being a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., a 30-year member of Tucker Baptist Church, and a retired teacher of Bess T. Shepherd. She enjoyed reading, birdwatching, caring for her yard, and decorating her house for every holiday. She loved getting great bargains at good yard sales, flea markets, and Goodwill. Most of all, she loved her family.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, her daughter Daphine King Zacharie, sisters: Melissa, Frances, Mary Ruth Anderson, Jeanette Goldston, Lesele Shopshire, Lula Mae Westfield, Willie Jean Johnson, brothers: Lucien ‘Andy’ Anderson, David Anderson, Gideon Anderson, Denver Anderson, Emmanuel Anderson.

She leaves a host of family and friends to mourn including, her children: Sherman W. King (Carolyn), Donel King (Jacqui), Ballerie King, grandchildren Sherman W. King, Jr.(Marie),  Donel King II,  Floyd Zacharie , James (Shay) Gillespie, Joy (Ryan ) Johnson, Claude (Megan) King, Corey (Keyata) Talley, David Thomas(Shakira Williams-Thomas),great grandchildren, Laila King, Kyre King, Grant Gillespie, Dylan Gillespie, Carsyn King, Jaxsyn Johnson, Jett Johnson, Katheryn ‘Katie’Zacharie, Jalen Zacharie , Taryn King, Corey Talley Jr.,Namarian Talley, Caden Talley, Marshia Talley, Cormarey Talley, Cormyah Talley, David Thomas, Noah Thomas, Zora Thomas. Two sisters, Mattie Jean Roberts and Hazel Ramsey both of Cleveland, TN. Special friends, Lucille Phillips, Amanda Courtney, Joyce Bowles, Katherine Corthen. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

A Homegoing celebration will be held Sunday, November 6, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Greater Tucker Baptist Church, 1115 N Moore Rd.  Chattanooga, TN with pastor Gary Hathaway delivering the eulogy. The family will receive friends one before the service at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow on Monday November 7 , 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Highland Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN.
