In Loving Memory of Chester T. Smith
September 3, 1925 – November 19, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Deacon Chester T. Smith, who departed this life peacefully on November 19, 2024, at the age of 99. A pillar of faith, family, and community, Chester lived a life full of purpose and love.
Born on September 3, 1925, to Andrew and Katie Smith, Chester grew up surrounded by the warmth of a large, close-knit family. He was preceded in death by his siblings Mabel, Carl, Albert, Robert, James, Eloise, and Lottie but is lovingly remembered by his remaining sisters Mattie (Robert) McCowan and Minnie Long.
In 1946, Chester married the love of his life, Eula Mae McCowan, embarking on 59 beautiful years of marriage until her passing in 2005. Together, they built a legacy of love through their children: Chester (Marsenia) Smith, Jean (Paul) Crenshaw, Jackie (Ray) Johnson, Joey (Robin) Smith, Steven (Rita) Smith, and their beloved daughter Darlene, who transitioned before him. Chester was also a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. His influence extended to a host of family members and friends, each touched by his kindness and wisdom.
In 1956, Chester became one of the first African American men employed at Bowater Plant, breaking barriers during a time when opportunities for Black workers were severely limited. Initially hired as a custodian—the only position available to Black employees at the time—Chester’s determination and work ethic made a lasting impression. Over the course of his 41-year career, he exemplified dedication and resilience, paving the way for future generations before retiring in 1997. Chester also served with the Bowater Police Auxiliary, further demonstrating his commitment to community safety and service.
A devoted entrepreneur, Chester was the proud owner of Turley’s Place, where he allowed his entrepreneurial spirit to shine. Beyond his professional and business endeavors, Chester found joy in service as a deacon at Oak Grove Baptist Church and as a member of the Oak Grove Jr. Quartet, where his faith and love for music uplifted all who listened.
Chester’s passions reflected his zest for life. He was an avid hunter, gardener, and landscaper, creating beauty and sustenance with his hands. A dedicated fan of the Atlanta Braves and L.A. Dodgers, he cheered for his teams with unwavering enthusiasm. His culinary talents earned him numerous chili awards, and his unwavering love and guidance earned him the title "Father of the Year" from Women United in 2002.
Above all, Chester loved God, his family, and his church. His faith was the foundation of his life, guiding his actions and inspiring those around him. He will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his loved ones, his community, and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
His memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in peace, Chester T. Smith – a trailblazer, a man of faith, and a soul deeply loved.
