Carolyn Craig Brewster, age 74, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2024. Carolyn was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. Born in Sweetwater, Tennessee, Carolyn attended High Point High School and graduated from Sweetwater High School. She was a dedicated member of the First United Church of Christ, where she served as a Mother and the Director of Christian Education.
Carolyn’s passion for spreading the word of God extended through her years teaching Sunday School and leading Bible study classes for battered women. One of her cherished roles was working with children, especially during Christmas programs. She was a key member of the Willing Workers Club, where she took on many responsibilities, including reading minutes from the meetings and helping with church committees. In addition to her church work, Carolyn sang in the Gospel Choir and loved organizing Vacation Bible School.
Education and ministry were central to Carolyn’s life. She earned an Associate’s Degree in Ministry from the International Ministry College. Her strong love of Christ was evident to all who knew her. Beyond her service in the church, Carolyn worked for many years as a caretaker and prepared food for local establishments like Sweetwater Hospital, Brown’s Elementary School, and Marvel’s Restaurant. She was known for her exceptional cooking, particularly her famous coleslaw, which she made for special occasions.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas and Georgina Upton, siblings Ruth Ellen Herman, Barbara Ronsman, Mary Tate, Susan (Suzie) Black and granddaughter Mackayla Brewster.
She is survived by her devoted husband Leonard Brewster, sibling Douglas (Mary) Upton, and children Bryan (Teresa) Brewster, April (Darnell) Johnson, Patricia (Henry)Johnson, grandchildren Kendra Lewis, Sydney Johnson, Mackenzie Brewster, Skye Brewster, Ken Lewis, and Chris Johnson. She was deeply loved by her nieces, nephews, extended family, and church community.
Carolyn’s life was marked by her devotion to her faith, and family. She will be remembered for her strength, love, and the impact she had on the lives of those around her. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Church of Christ in Sweetwater, TN with pastor, Rev. Nicholas Jones officiating and Rev. Vant Hardaway delivering the eulogy. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Sweetwater Memorial Gardens. Visitation by friends and love ones also on Wednesday, Sept 25, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at M.D. Dotson and Sons Funeral Home – Athens, TN.
