Burkett L. Witt

Burkett Levon Witt passed away on August 11, 2023 at the age of 97. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry Witt & Mary Bell Cates Witt of Athens Tn. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle that spanned five generations. He loved the Lord and his church, and his favorite song was “ Amazing Grace.”

Burkett was the 10th child of 10 children and the last child to transition. His brothers were Jim Witt, Olen Witt, Melvin Witt, & Robert Witt. His sisters were Malen Witt, Mattie Witt Long, Cudella Witt, Dorothy Witt McDermott, & Helen Witt. He was married to Mildred Scott Witt for 55 years before her death in 2000.

He leaves to cherish his memory, son Harold Witt (Linda) of Antioch, Tn. Gwendolyn Witt McCowan of Athens, Tn. & Brian Witt of Athens. His grandchildren include: Pamela McCowan Bragg of Athens, Lori McCowan Royal ( Louie) of Athens, Tn., Dr. Reginald Witt of Collierville, Tn., Candace Witt, Baltimore, Maryland, Crystal Witt, Antioch, Tn. & Destinee Witt, Atlanta Georgia. Great-grandchildren include Joshua L. Bragg (Katie) of Niota, Tn., Trey Royal (Kelsey) Athens, Tn., Kyla Royal Martin ( Nick) Athens, Tn. Great-great grandchildren Leyonah & Malakai Royal & Stella Bragg. One niece, Alice Oliver of Athens, Tn. Kenneth (Charlesetta) & Webster McDermott of Athens, Tn. And a host of great & great great nieces & nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. at McMinn County High School gymnasium, with Rev. Vant Hardaway delivering the eulogy, and Rev.Walter King officiating, the family will receive friends one hour before the service from 4:00 p.m until 5:00 p.m.

The family will also be receiving friends on Friday, August 18, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Light of Life Faith Ministries International  1112 Congress Parkway Athens, TN. Interment will follow the Celebration of Life Service on Saturday with military honor guard at Hammonds Cemetery in Athens, TN.
