Oggie Mae ‘Dean’ McDermott age 94 of Athens, TN. passed December 2, 2015 in a local Athens health care facility. She was a member of Cox Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church since its origination, serving as the secretary, missionary president, deaconess, and on several other auxiliaries. She was also a district officer of the Chattanooga District Life Members of the A.M.E. Church for over thirty years.
She was very fond of gardening, serving and taking care of family.
She is preceded in death by her husband Theodore “Pat” McDermott, three sons, William, Jackie, and Glenn McDermott, and she was the daughter of the late Rev. David Smith and Minnie Lane Smith.
Survivors include two daughters, Patsy (Rev. Elihue) Looney and Lola Brewster Arnold all of Athens, Tn. Two brothers, Joe (Johnnie Mae) Smith of Niota, TN., and Phillip Smith of Athens, TN. A devoted and loving sister-in-law Zella Smith of Niota, TN. Nine grandchildren, many great-grand children, a host of great-greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 6, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Lanes Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Niota, TN., with presiding Elder J.R. Bridgeman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Lanetown Cemetery in Niota, Tn. Visitation by friends will begin after 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home- Athens, TN.
